📚 Books
- Factfulness - Hans Rosling - This is a must read book. The amount we get wrong about the world intuitively is pretty shocking. It’s hard to read newspapers, particularly the opinion pieces, and not instantly spot where their worldview is wrong.
- Algorithms To Live By - Brian Christian & Tom Griffiths - I’m still working through the last few pages of this book. As somebody that works with computers a lot of the algorithms themselves are well known to me, but the idea of applying a LRU cache to my t-shirt draw is new, and something worth trying.
✈ Travel
We did a quick city break to Berlin, mostly to pop into Atonal festival in the amazing Kraftwerk power station, but also just because I’ve never been there before.
We spent most of our time around Friedrichshain/Kreuzberg, where there don’t actually seem to be any German people. The predominant language (including restaurant menus) seems to be English, followed by French and then Italian.
I definitely can’t say I loved Berlin. It’s been ages since I’ve been to a bar/club and come out smelling of smoke. It seems you have to go to Berlin to get that experience these days. The heavy reliance on cash just seems old-fashioned now. It blew their minds in one restaurant that you could do NFC payments by phone in England.
